| MILLERS WIN SCVL OPENER, 7-3 By: Dave Newman News sports editor Santa delivered the ace pitcher that New Richmond Millers manager Ryan Stephens has been dreaming about over the winter. In the Miller's St Croix Valley League opener in Ellsworth on Saturday, Tim Brown Showed he is the answers to Stephens's dreams. Brown pitched eight strong innings on Saturday, carrying the Millers to a 7-3 win over the Hubbers. The Millers won a total of seven St. Croix Valley League games during the past three season, largely because they lacked the number one pitcher who could keep them in every game. Enter Brown, who formerly pitched for Osceola. Brown was looking for a situation where he'd be given the ball every possible opportunity. Stephens said Brown will get the opportunity to pitch every SCVL game possible. Brown lived up to the billing as an "ace" Saturday, striking out 10 while holding Ellsworth to five hits over eight innings. With the confidence of having Brown on the mound, the rest of the Millers played an inspired game. They rand up a total of 14 hits, led by three from Dan Kretovics, Casey Crisp, Dave Measner, Curt Kleinschmidt and Ryan Telschow each supplied two hits. The game was scoreless until the fourth. Telschow singled, moved up on Scott Emerson's hit and then scored on a throwing error by the Ellsworth catcher. Ellsworth tied the game with a run in the bottom of the fourth. In the fifth inning the Millers took the lead for good with three runs. The Millers loaded the bases, Kleinschmidt came through with a two-run single to give the Millers a 3-1 lead. Moments later Mike Kammerer scored on an Ellworth error. Kammerer doubled to lead off the seventh inning and scored on Kleinschmidt's single. The final tow runs came home on a triple by Measner in the eight inning. This was New Richmond's first win over Ellsworth in three years. |

| Millers pre-season over; key games arrive now By: Dave Newman News sports editor The New Richmond Millers' pre-season ended on Friday with mixed results. There isn't time to dwell on the pre-season. Starting Friday, the Millers play five St. Croix Valley League games within two weeks. And those games will go a long wasy in determining how the Millers Fare in the SCVL this season. Friday the Millers play at home against Menomonie in a 7 p.m. start. On Sunday the Millers play at 1 p.m. in Hudson. That is followed games Bay City, Elmwood and Spring Valley, before the Millers host a tournament on June 16-18. The Millers are 1-3, But in the three losses manager Ryan Stephens used his young players to get them some seasoning. Many of the younger players struggled in the two games, last week, an 11-3 loss to Stillwater Wednesday and a 11-8 setback at Haugen Last Friday. There were some positives against Haugen. Casey Crisp has been sizzling as the Millers' leadoff hitter, with a .529 average (9-17) in the first four games. Crisp and Mike Tarman each had three hits at Haugen. Scott Emerson and Crisp each produced two-run doubles in the loss. Stephens led off the fourth inning with a solo homer. There was little to cheer about against Stillwater. The team was held to five hits, two by Crisp, and They were out of the game early. Stephens said one of the young players who may have earned more playing time in the preseason games is Mitch Paquin. There hasn't been anyone who has stepped forward to win second base job, but Paquin may be ready to. "He's very mature for his age and he's an aggressive swinger," Stephens said. |
